Bambanani Programme

(Ages 1-6)

First Steps Matter Most

Active in 300 early learning centres, Bambanani has reached over 40,000 children and trained more than 3,000 teachers. It's more than pre-school education — it's about giving every child a chance to thrive.

In South Africa and worldwide, early childhood education is one of the most effective ways to break the cycle of poverty and address inequality. At Afrika Tikkun, this begins with Bambanani, our flagship Early Childhood Development (ECD) programme for children aged 1–6. As the foundation of our Cradle-to-Career 360° model, Bambanani supports the crucial early years – when over 90% of brain development occurs – through safety, care, and structured learning.

Research shows the first six years are critical for language, emotional, and cognitive growth. Children with access to ECD are more likely to succeed in school, avoid chronic illness, and break the cycle of poverty. Yet access remains limited, especially in low-income areas. In South Africa, many children still start school without basic literacy or numeracy. Bambanani addresses this gap by offering comprehensive support during these formative years.

Bambanani is Afrika Tikkun's answer to early learning programmes that combine compassion, education, and impact. Designed for children aged 1 to 6 years, this ECD model operates in Diepsloot, Orange Farm, and Mfuleni, directly aligned with national and international standards and the South African ECD Index.

Every Bambanani ECD centre is more than a school — it's a safe haven. Staffed by trained social workers, educators, and caregivers, the centres are structured for optimal school readiness.

  • Age-appropriate classrooms with stimulating materials
  • Healthy, balanced meals and health screenings
  • Individualised attention with low child-to-teacher ratios
  • Activities that promote emotional awareness, creativity, and problem-solving

How We Train Teachers and Build Capacity

Bambanani wouldn't succeed without its teachers. That's why Afrika Tikkun invests in comprehensive, SACE-accredited training that equips educators and principals with tools for inclusive education, leadership, and classroom management. The curriculum is standardised and internationally certified, ensuring every child, regardless of background, receives consistent care and instruction.

In addition to in-person training, teachers and families benefit from digitised materials and ongoing support that fosters both community development and professional growth.

Bambanani and the SDGs

Bambanani supports multiple Sustainable Development Goals, aligning with UNICEF and national goals to make early childhood development a global priority.

No Poverty

By breaking the cycle early through education.

Good Health and Wellbeing
