In South Africa, a generation of young people is eager to work — yet held back by systemic barriers. Youth unemployment remains alarmingly high, especially in townships, where limited access to education, training, and professional networks creates cycles of disadvantage.
Afrika Tikkun's Head Start programme is a response to this challenge. Integrated into our Cradle to Career model, it bridges the gap between learning and earning by providing work experience, training, and mentorship tailored to the needs of today's job market.
What Is the Head Start Programme?
The Head Start programme is a 12-month youth development programme designed to fast-track young people into the workforce. It is part of Afrika Tikkun's broader youth empowerment strategy and directly addresses the need for practical, real-world training. Participants are supported in their journey toward professional independence, receiving hands-on experience, personal development support, and skills to succeed.
The programme focuses on youth aged 18–35, especially those who have already participated in Afrika Tikkun's Level Up Programme. It targets candidates ready to transition into meaningful employment or entrepreneurship, building both technical and life skills.
Who Is It For?
The Head Start programme is open to young people aged 18–35 who meet the following criteria:
- •Completed Afrika Tikkun's Level Up programme
- •South African citizenship
- •Passed Grade 12
- •Unemployed and not studying full-time
- •Available for the full 12-month duration
The programme prioritises inclusive recruitment, welcoming youth living with disabilities and those from vulnerable backgrounds — recognising the importance of equity in youth development.
On the Job: Structured Workplace Training
Head Start participants are placed with one of Afrika Tikkun's host partners, where they gain hands-on experience and structured training.

- •Online and in-person training aligned with national frameworks
- •Continuous support from a youth development specialist
- •Integration with Afrika Tikkun's 360° Social Support Services, including psychosocial support, meals, and transport stipends
Training includes both soft and technical skills, covering customer service, workplace etiquette, communication, digital literacy, and teamwork. This blended learning approach ensures participants gain tools for long-term success, both professionally and personally.
